A LITTLE PRINCESS

“From the top of the tree I see the river. The river flows to the docks. Boats go out from the docks to the wide ocean. And my mother watches over me. I never knew her, so we never said goodbye.”

‘quite simply, a joy to experience… a right royal success, refreshing a much-loved story with class, ingenuity and dexterity’

A NEW PRINCESS

NOTE FROM ORIGINAL PRODUCTION

A Little Princess exists in many forms. Frances Hodgson Burnett originally wrote a short story ‘What Happened at Miss Minchin’s’ (itself inspired by part of a story by Charlotte Brontë). She then wrote a play, expanding the short story – and then a novel expanding on the play. She even saw it made into a film in 1917 – the first of many screen and stage versions, all of which have altered the story in various ways. We have aimed to be true to the emotions and ideas of the original book, while making a version we hope brings a classic story alive for new audiences as well as those who love it already.

We have been inspired by learning about Frances Hodgson Burnett’s life, including the ways it mirrors Sara Crewe’s: her experience of poverty after her father died, and her migration across the ocean to live in a new environment. In Hodgson Burnett’s case, she became the family breadwinner at an early age and a hugely successful writer in a male-dominated literary world.

A Little Princess is a story about a girl who comes to England from India so as we created this version we wanted to make the South Asian musical world part of the fabric of the score. Fusing Carnatic music with contemporary musical theatre has been an exciting development and has led to a wonderful journey of discovery.
